Verbs
The present tense of regular verbs
O presente dos verbos regulares
-ar: falo, fala, falamos, falam. -er: como, come, comemos, comem. -ir: abro, abre, abrimos, abrem.
Rule and examples
Three families: -ar, -er, -ir
We remove -ar, -er or -ir and add the endings. -ar: eu falo · você fala · nós falamos · vocês falam. -er: eu como · você come · nós comemos · vocês comem. -ir: eu abro · você abre · nós abrimos · vocês abrem. “Você” and “a gente” use the “ele/ela” form.
Example Eu falo. · Ela come. · Nós abrimos. · Eles falam.
Careful: the plural ends in -m, not -n
The third person plural ends in -m: eles falam, eles comem, eles abrem. In Spanish it ends in -n (hablan, comen, abren), but never in Portuguese. And the -s of Spanish “tú” (hablas, comes) does not exist with “você”.
Example Eles falam. · Elas comem. · Vocês abrem.
The “eu” form sometimes changes
Some verbs change only in the “eu” form: conhecer → conheço (c becomes ç before o), proteger → protejo (g becomes j), pedir → peço, ouvir → ouço, dormir → durmo, seguir → sigo, perder → perco. Verbs in -ear take -ei-: passear → passeio, passeia. The other persons follow the pattern.
Example Eu conheço. · Eu peço. · Eu durmo. · Eu passeio.
