Ter and haver: tem, têm, há
Ter e haver: tem, têm, há
Ter: eu tenho, ele tem, eles têm (accent in the plural!). Haver: há (there is/are) and havia, always singular.
Rule and examples
Ter: tenho, tem, temos, têm
Present of ter: eu tenho · você/ele tem · nós temos · vocês/eles têm. We use ter for possession (tenho um gato), age (tenho dez anos) and feelings (tenho fome, sede, sono, medo, frio, calor, pressa).
Example Eu tenho dez anos. · Ela tem fome. · Eles têm um gato.
Tem or têm?
In the singular, no accent: ele tem, ela tem, você tem. In the plural, with a circumflex accent: eles têm, elas têm, vocês têm. The same happens with vir: ele vem, eles vêm. The accent does not change the sound, but it shows the plural.
Example Ele tem um gato. · Eles têm um gato. · Ela vem. · Elas vêm.
Haver: há, havia
To say that something exists, written language uses haver: Há um dragão no jardim. (In speech, many people say “tem”.) When haver means “to exist”, it always stays singular: Há muitas nuvens. Havia dois balões. Never “Haviam dois balões”. In Spanish it is “hay”; in Portuguese it is “há”. We also use “há” for time that has passed: Moro aqui há dois anos.
Example Há um dragão. · Havia dois balões. · Moro aqui há dois anos.
