Ser ou estar?

Ser: who or what someone is, where from, what they are like by nature. Estar: where something is and how it is right now.

Ser: identity and characteristics

We use ser to say who or what someone is, a profession, origin, material, day and time, whose something is, and what someone is like by nature. Present: eu sou · você é · nós somos · vocês são. Gus é padeiro. Eu sou do Brasil. A mesa é de madeira. Hoje é segunda-feira.

Example Gus é padeiro. · Eu sou do Brasil. · A mesa é de madeira.

Estar: place and state right now

We use estar to say where someone or something is and how it is right now (a state that changes). Present: eu estou · você está · nós estamos · vocês estão. O gato está na cama. Eu estou cansado. A sopa está fria. Also: estou com fome, estou com sono, estou com medo, and estar + gerúndio (estou comendo).

Example O gato está na cama. · Eu estou cansado. · Estou com fome.

The same adjective, another meaning

With ser we talk about what someone or something is always like; with estar, about how it is now. O gelo é frio (always). A sopa está fria (right now, but it can get warm). Léo é calmo (his nature). Léo está bravo (today). Events use ser: A festa é no sábado.
